In 1977 Martin, 30, unemployed historian, is in London. He's going to see Alec in Madeira. They go to Leo, a rich employer of Alec. Martin sees a picture of 1908 with Churchill and Strafford, former owner of the house and then Minister of the Interior. His memories were in the house. Leo hires Martin to unravel the mystery of Strafford. This one frequented Elizabeth, grandmother of Helen, ex-wife of Martin. In 1910, he resigns to marry her but she leaves him! She married Couchman, former friend of Strafford in 1914. In 1919, Stafford accepted the consulship of Madeira. Martin returns to England and discovers a South African marriage act of Strafford. Ambrose, Strafford's nephew, finds the afterword to his memoirs. Martin goes to see them but Ambrose was found drowned. He finds the postface and discovers that in 1951 in Madeira, Leo gave Strafford a South African birth certificate saying he is his son with the name of his adoptive family. Strafford had him arrested and went to England where he made Couch confess to having imitated his signature on the acts and caused his decay. Then Strafford went to Ambrose where he died. Martin posts the postface to Elizabeth. Henry, son of Couch, confesses to having accidentally pushed Ambrose into the river and ordered the crime of Strafford. Elizabeth invites Leo and Henry who kills himself on the way. They burn the postface. Leo admits to killing Strafford and Martin kills him. He is sentenced to 15 years in prison. Elizabeth buys Strafford's house in Madeira, dies there in 1983 and bequeaths everything to Martin.
