Abdemelec

Abdemelec (also translated as Ebed-Melec) is a biblical character of the Old Testament. His name means Melec's servant, although the meaning of Melec is not known with certainty, that can be as much of a deity as of a king. However, by the time of King Sedecias (598 BC) this category of mercenary officer of the royal palace (possibly instituted by King David) had become a proper name of the official who performed it.

In the biblical account, it is an Ethiopian official, King Zedekiah's servant who shrewdly saved Jeremiah from death, which the prophet thanked him with the promise of being protected by God at the time of the destruction of Jerusalem (Jer 39: 15-18) at the hands of Nebuchadnezzar II. The whole story appears in the Book of Jeremiah.
