Applied Linguistics (Education)

Applied linguistics is the name of bachelor's degree in Flanders leading to the master's degree in Translation, Interpreting or Multilingual Communication. The program is called "applied" because it distinguishes itself from other university education in (foreign) languages such as Language and Literature, which have a more theoretical and historical character. The Applied Linguistics courses focus specifically on the management of foreign languages, including (mainly contemporary) culture and society, translation, Dutch control, general knowledge, and knowledge of communication and translation technology.

The origins of the courses are in the former "interpreters" schools, which were of great success, and the training of translator and interpreter has been developed into academic education. Since the reform of higher education in Flanders (2013), the programs no longer form part of the colleges, but are now university courses.
