Angel (currency)

Angel of the reign of Henry VIII of England.

An angel is a gold coin, used for the first time in France (where it was also known as angelot and ange) in 1340, and introduced in England by Edward IV in 1465 as a new type of "noble" and called it at the beginning the "angel-noble". It varied in value between that period and the reign of Charles I, when it was coined for the last time (1642), from 6 shillings and 8 pence to 11 shillings. Its name derives from the representation it had of San Miguel and the dragon.
