Hood

"Hood" redirects here. For other meanings, see Hood (disambiguation). Child with hood

A hood is a type of head cover that covers most of the head and neck and sometimes the face. They can be used for weather protection, as fashion, as a clothing form or as part of a traditional uniform, to prevent the wearer from being easily identified.

Today, fashion hoods are generally soft head covers that are part of a larger garment (eg a coat, a shirt or a cape, an exception is the hood for rain that does not form part of a larger garment). Hoods can be placed over the head when needed or left on the back of the garment when not. They can also be removable to transform a winter coat into a spring coat or they can be designed to be folded or rolled up in a small pocket that is placed on the collar of the garment when not in use.

Historically, hoods from before were similar to modern hoods, often forming part of a cape or coat or a separate hat shape. Capers were very common in medieval Europe and later developed into extravagant hats. Some soft hoods were also used by men under hats. Other uses Members of the Ku Klux Klan Hooded
