Silabario kpelle

The syllabary kpelle was developed around 1930-1935 by Chief Gbili, a native of Sanoyea (Bong, Liberia), in order to provide a form of writing to the Kpelle language, a member of the Niger-Congo language group of the Mandé languages used by about 490,000 people in Liberia and 300,000 in Guinea.

The syllabary consists of 88 graphemes and is written from left to right in horizontal lines. Some symbols have more than one graphic form.

It achieved some popularity, being used among kpelle speakers in the 1930s and 1940s but was subsequently abandoned.

Currently the Latin alphabet is used for writing the kpelle language.
