The Arbeiter-Zeitung (Workers' Newspaper) was founded as a socialist newspaper by Victor Adler on July 12, 1889. It was banned in 1934 after the publication of the February 13 issue but reappeared on August 4, 1945 as the main organ of expression of the Social Democratic Party of Austria, being published until 1989 as newspaper of general coverage of Austrian and international news. Between 1989 and 1991 it was published as an independent newspaper, and publication ceased after that year.
Between 1985 and 1989 it was published under the title Neue AZ (New AZ); and between 1989 and 1991 simply as AZ.
Among the most prominent contributors and editors of the newspaper in the prewar period is the editor of Culture David Josef Bach.
