Cairo Opera


The Cairo Opera House (Arabic: دار الأوبرا المصري, also known as the Egyptian Opera House) is part of the National Culture Center in Cairo, and is the main performing arts venue in the Egyptian capital. It is home to most of the best musical groups in Egypt, it is located in the southern part of the island of Gezira on the Nile River, in the Zamalek neighborhood in the west and near the center of Cairo.

The opera was inaugurated on October 10, 1988. The funds for the complex were a donation from Japan to Egypt as a result of the visit of then-President Hosni Mubarak to Japan in April 1983. Construction began in May 1985 and it lasted three years.

In October 1988, President Mubarak and His Imperial Highness, Prince Tomohito of Mikasa, younger brother of the Japanese emperor, inaugurated the National Culture Center in Cairo.
