Crisostomo Colonna


Crisostomo Colonna or Colunna (Caggiano, 1460 - Naples, 1528) was an Italian poet, humanist and politician. Biography

He was the second son of a patrician family, and he started the ecclesiastical career becoming a priest. He was vicar of the church of Santa Lucia a Caggiano.

He moved to Naples where King Ferdinand I of Naples appointed him prefect and secretary of his son Frederick. From 1486 to 1489 he was ambassador to Rome, Poland and Spain. He had the titles of "tesoriere" of the Basilica of San Nicolás de Bari and of the Archidioconus of the Cathedral of Bitonto. Between 1501 and 1505 he was again in Spain as preceptor of the young Fernando de Aragón, son of Federico.

Intimate friend of Giovanni Pontano, belonged to the Pontaniana Academy. Knower of ancient Greek, he wrote poetic works in latiin and in Italian (sonnets and Petrarchan songs).
