Matthew Thomlinson


Matthew Thomlinson (1617-1681) was an English soldier who fought in the parliamentary party during the Civil War. He was one of the army officers involved in the regicide of Charles I for overseeing the trial and execution of the king.

He becomes a cavalry colonel in the New Model Army. After the dissolution of the Croupion Parliament by Oliver Cromwell, he became a member of the Council of State and Parliament of the Barebones. Sent to Ireland, he is knighted by Henry Cromwell who nevertheless did not trust him. In 1658 he was recalled to London where he represented Ireland in the House of Lords that Cromwell had just restored (Third Protectorate Parliament). He was indicted in 1660 during the reinstatement of the Rump Parliament.
