The city of Basel was a free state city within the Holy Roman Empire, the territory of which corresponds with the Swiss Canton of Basel

Basel is first mentioned in the fifth century and was originally part of the Princebisdom Basel. After the divisions of the Franconian empire, Basel from 912 to 1033 became part of the kingdom of Upper Burgundy, which was united in 1033 with the Holy Roman Empire. The growing wealth allowed the city to get rid of the princbisdom. In 1362 Basel calculated itself to the free cities. In 1376, the Duke Leopold of Austria succeeded in acquiring the state guard of the city, which was a new threat to the independence of the city. After the defeat of Austria at Sempach in 1386, Habsburg's pressure on the city disappeared. In 1400 the city acquired the offices of Liestal, Homburg and Waldenburg. This was the beginning of the formation of the territory. In 1461 the Sisgau county was bought. Because the city was constantly threatened by France and Austria, she sought a connection with the Spouses. In 1440 were connected with Bern and Solothurn. In 1500, the city was divided into the Upper Rhine Kreits by the classification of the Holy Roman Empire. After the city had remained neutral during the Swab War of 1499, on July 13, 1501, she joined the Eedgenoten as the eleventh city.
