Charlie Patcham retires, that is, he has reached retirement age, but there is no real pension for him. It's such a difficult time for the management, you know! Well, he becomes the Scathergate and Co. thanks for appreciation for his 31 years of faithful service, an antique marble pendant was offered. But Charlie's wife, Mary, can only appreciate the donated antique - or the sample, as she expresses it - and therefore advises him to sell the thing. And so the good man draws the clock from one address to another. However, no watch shop is interested in his pendulum. They offer him up to five guilders and, therefore, basta! And while Charlie, tired of shoveling, stands out on a couch with a clock next to him, a stranger gets out, sitting next to him, gives Charlie envelope content (and something for content) and takes the clock. Still amazed at the incident, another man Charlie gives a moment later - a cross between a radio and alarm clock - takes the envelope that Charlie has in hand and disappears again. For example, Charlie is involved in a mysterious espionage affair and he must be someone else.
