Vacuum aesthetics

The concept of vacuum aesthetics corresponds to a partial theoretical construct that seeks a referential and interpretative framework for psychosocial instances in which memory and forgetting are the central themes.

The idea of aesthetics of emptiness applied to Social Psychology corresponds to Juan Francisco Zapata Zavala, a Chilean psychologist interested in contemporary social forms and expressions.

The notion of emptiness is considered from the classic structuralist approaches; particularly from one of its central notions that is the empty box. This can be explained with a simple example: in the checkers game there is a board, the chips and the empty boxes that allow the circulation of the chips. It is essential for a structure that there are empty spaces that allow the movement and circulation of the elements, which produces new frames of appreciation and understanding of social phenomena, among others.

The inclusion of aesthetics is based on the need to interpret these new forms and circulations based on emptiness. An approach from the forms, from the senses, thus acceding to an approach of the structures in constant movement from the perceptions imbricated in social frames.

Themes worked from this approach are those of memory, forgetfulness (emptiness) and ways of remembering through oblivion, considering oblivion as a vacuum that promotes new memory structures.
