Clergy laity

Clericis laicos is a bull of Pope Boniface VIII (dated February 25, 1296), which forbade, under pain of excommunication, any levy of new taxes on the clergy without the authorization of the pope. This bubble was at the origin of a violent conflict between Philip the Fair and Boniface VIII. It will be followed in the same context conflict in 1301 a second severe admonition of the pope, Ausculta fili and finally, in 1302, a last attempt with the bull Unam Sanctam.
