The Edinburgh Festival is an international festival of the arts, with a clear emphasis on music and theater.

Established in 1947 by Rudolf Bing, it is held for three weeks each summer. His stage appearances range from representations of the main theatrical companies of the world; to debut performances at the same festival, such as The Cocktail Party by T. S. Eliot (1949) and The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder (1954). The Edinburgh Fringe simultaneous event attracts amateur theater groups and has premiered works such as Beyond the Fringe (1960) and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have died of Tom Stoppard (1966). Musically, the festival offers concerts, recitals and operas by international companies, orchestras and soloists.
