George Gaskoin


George Gaskoin (1817 - Caerleon, February 5, 1887) was an English dermatologist, surgeon and translator. Biography

He started as an apprentice at St. George's Hospital and was a titular surgeon since 1839. He then worked at the British Hospital for diseases of the skin and dedicated a book to his research on psoriasis and leprosy. He was the first to describe the Bean syndrome in 1860 (named after William Bennet Bean, who documented it in more detail in 1958). Friend of the Spanish doctor and sub-inspector of the army health department Bonifacio Montejo, he dedicated his translation of the works of the Spanish physician and humanist Francisco López de Villalobos, to which he added comments and a biography (The Medical Works of Francisco Lopez De Villalobos, the Celebrated Court Physician of Spain, 1870). He was a fellow of the Royal Academy of Surgery and was named knight of the Order of Christ of Portugal and knight of the Order of Isabella the Catholic in Spain. He died after long illness in his brother's house and is buried in the parish of Saint Cadoc in Caerleon, Wales. Work
