Johannes Verhulststraat

The Johannes Verhulststraat is a street in the Amsterdam district of Zuid, named after the Dutch composer and conductor Johannes Verhulst.

The street runs parallel to the north of De Lairessestraat between the Jan Willem Brouwersstraat and the Lassusstraat and is crossed by Jacob Obrechtstraat, Banstraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, Emmastraat and Dufaystraat.

The street was built around 1900 in an original agricultural area with ditches, fields and meadows. At least two farms have been demolished for the construction of the street. Between 1900 and 1903, project developers, such as Operation Society Aurora, built contiguous blocks of houses with mansions, dwellings and shops built by architects like L. van der Tas, S.P. Herfst, J. Lenderik, J.W.F. van Schaik, A. de Geus van de Heuvel, H.T. Staring, G. Voorvelt and L.D. Pop in the Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau styles. Trivia
