Kapla (toys)

Kapla building Kapla cubes

Kapla is the name of wooden blocks of the same name brand. The blocks are used for example model construction. Each block has an identical size and shape in the ratio 1: 3: 15. Origin and form

The idea for Kapla was created around 1985, when the Dutch art historian and antique trader Tom van der Bruggen moved to France and searched for a block to build a castle on a scale. The name Kapla comes from the beginning of the two words: KAbouter PLAnkjes.

Unlike many other building games, all shelves are exactly the same. The precision makes it possible to make larger buildings (the building in the picture was built from 800 boards). Each shelf is a 1: 3: 15 ratio bar. The dimensions are 11.8 by 2.4 by 0.8 cm (L x W x H).

The boards are of pine wood and unprocessed, although shelves are available in color. Commercial Availability

Kapla is for sale in boxes of 20, 40, 100, 200, 280 and 1000 boards. The sets contain different notebooks, but step-by-step guides are not included.

The target audience is especially children. Kapla is used as educational toys in Dutch and French schools and childcare. The many possibilities of the simple shelf also attracted many adults.
