Mark 32 Pipeline Tubes

Launching of an Mk 46 torpedo from a Mk 32 launcher from USS Mustin destroyer (DDG-89).

The Mark 32 Surface Vessel Torpedo Tubes system (abbreviated Mk 32 SVTT) is a set of torpedo launchers for surface ships that has been in service since the 1960s. Each launcher has three tubes capable of unloading a lightweight torpedo like the Mk 46, Mk 50 or Mk 54. Designed for proximity antisubmarine action, launches torpedoes with compressed air in a compartment at the back of the tube that also acts as a rear door. Depending on the modification number (Mod) of each particular tube, the mount can be operated manually or remotely from firing positions that may be within the structure of the vessel. The normal launch is electrically initiated at the firing control panel located at the ship's combat information center. All launched torpedoes are "shoot and forget" weapons. The Mk 32 SVTT tubes are made of fiberglass and aluminum, originally designed to be resistant to the elements and protect the torpedoes from the elements; however, to achieve this they require extensive maintenance.
