Primary active transport, also called direct active transport, uses directly supplied energy to transport molecules across the membrane.

Most enzymes that carry out this kind of transport are transmembrane ATPase. The sodium-potassium pump is an ATPase necessary for cell life. The energy required for these transport protein complexes can also come from an oxidation-reduction or a photon. The mitochondrial electron transport chain uses NADH reduction energy to pass protons across the inner membrane of mitochondria against their concentration gradient. During photosynthesis, photon energy is used to create a proton gradient across the membrane of thylakoids, but also to create a reducing power by forming NADPH. Notes and edit the code
