The protests began on May 21, 2011, when more than 10,000 Georgians attended a demonstration in Tbilisi demanding the resignation of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. In the southwest of the city of Batumi some demonstrations also took place with some protesters attempted to break into a television building. Nino Burjanadze, a former parliamentarian speaker and leader of the United Democratic Movement-part of Georgia, has been a leading figure in the demonstrations.
