Symphony No. 25 (Miaskovsky)

Symphony No. 25 in B-flat major was composed by Nikolai Myaskovsky in 1946. It was premiered by Alexander Gauk and the State Symphony Orchestra of the Soviet Union on March 6, 1947 at the Moscow Conservatory. Myaskovsky began his composition in the summer of 1946, would be his first considerable orchestral work after World War II. It is dedicated to Levon Atovmian, fellow composer of Myaskovsky. The work is distinguished from other symphonies by beginning with a slow movement in form variations on a theme (Adagio). This movement is followed by another slow movement (Moderato), and the work concludes a faster movement where the main theme of the first movement (Allegro impetuous) is reexposed. In 1949 Myaskovsky would make small revisions to the work.
