Diomedes van Nicea

Diomedes van Nicea

The sacred diomedes of Nicea (Tarsus (Cilicia), 3rd century - Bithynia, ca. 305) was a martyr of the 3rd century.

He was a doctor and a Christian, and he treated not only physical diseases and diseases, but also mental. He converted many Gentiles to the faith in Christ, and baptized them. The church honors him as a healer and mentions him during the Secret of Sacred Ointment (Sacrament of the Sick).

Diomedes traveled a lot. When he arrived in the city of Nicea, Emperor Diocletian sent soldiers to arrest him. Along the road from Nicea to Nicomedia, he drove off the cart to pray, and was killed by the soldiers with an ax. As proof of executing their orders, the soldiers cut off their head to bring it to the emperor. The soldiers, however, became blind. Diocletian ordered to bring the head back to the body. When the soldiers fulfilled this order, their eyesight was restored and converted to Christianity.

The name of the Diomedan Islands is derived from the name of this saint. Vitus Bering visited these islands on August 16, 1728, the day the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the memorial day of Saint Diomedes.
