Earl is a nobility title adopted in England since the conquest of the Danish king Knut in the eleventh century, responding to the Scandinavian Jarl, equivalent to the French title of count. He comes after that of marquis. This title designated first the governors of shires or counties. The title was also adopted in Scotland, replacing the old title of Mormaer.

In the nineteenth century, this title is purely honorific and does not imply any function. Nowadays, the Earls are members of the United Kingdom's Pairie. There is no female equivalent; women are countess titled ("Countess"). Notes and edit the code
