Blind kind

Blind child is a documentary from 1964 by the Dutch filmmaker and photographer Johan van der Keuken. For this portrait of a group of blind children, Van der Keuken stayed two months in the Royal Institute for Blind Education in Houses.

Blind child is considered to be a highlight in Van der Keuken's oeuvre. The film is recorded with a sometimes very moving camera in natural light. There is no clear story line, either a commentary or the explanation of experts. The assembly is associative, sometimes loose images without sound. Van der Keuken tries to let the viewer move in the position of the blind child in 25 minutes. This form makes Blind child a typical Dutch example of cinéma vérité, a way of filming in which the filmmaker does not interfere, does not ask any question and merely registers.

In 2007, Blind child was added to the Canon of the Dutch film.
