Elephant graveyard

The cemetery of elephants, according to African mythology and popular myth, was a mythical place located in Africa where it was believed that dying elephants would spend their last days. The place was searched during the 19th century for the supposed ivory that would be found in that fantastic place.

According to the hypothesis put forward by Rupert Sheldrake, part of the myth is true. The legend arose from the fact that elephant skeletons are frequently found in groups, near water sources. According to Sheldrake, elephants with some type of malnutrition instinctively seek this type of watery source, hoping that the liquid will allow them to improve their conditions. Those animals that fail to improve their condition, show increasingly lower levels of blood sugar, and end up dying when they are still in the vicinity of water (and the bones of other elephants).

The study of the behavior of elephants in the face of the death of their peers has revealed, on the other hand, that they react clearly to the situation by accompanying or watching corpses. Popular culture
