Wards of the Emperor

The Waltz of the Emperor (Kaiser-Walzer), op. 437, is a waltz composed by Johann Strauss (son) in 1889.

Originally titled Mano a mano, and was composed in August of that year on the occasion of the visit of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany to Francis Joseph I in Austria. However, he would eventually be left with the current name of Kaiser-Walzer because it was considered by Fritz Simrock a diplomatically more appropriate name. It first sounded in Berlin on October 21, 1889.

The majesty of the piece can be seen in its composition. It begins with a gentle march that advances in crescendo, as the main melody is introduced. It remains in the background along the waltz. As the end approaches, a cello solo repeats the first structure, before ending with a trumpet fanfare, accompanied by a timpani.
