GKSS Research Center - GKSS Centro de Investigación

The GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht GmbH was founded in 1956 under the name Gesellschaft für Kernenergieverwertung in Schiffbau und Schiffahrt mbH (Company for the use of nuclear energy in the construction of ships and sea voyages) in the sector of Krümmel, belonging to the German city of Geesthacht. The star project of the 1960s was the atomic propulsion ship NS Otto Hahn. After the failure of the project, the construction of ships is not a task of the GKSS Research Center, so the abbreviation GKSS no longer makes sense.

GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht GmbH is one of 15 research centers that are members of the German research center community called Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft. GKSS is financed by the German state by 90% and by the states of Schleswig-Holstein, Niedersachsen, Hamburg and Brandenburg by 10%.
