International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage


The International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage (TICCIH) or International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage is an international organization founded in 1973, aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of industry and industrial society, including industrial archeology. History

The organization was founded on the occasion of a conference of specialists in Ironbridge, United Kingdom, considered the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

This organization had already begun to make its first steps in parallel with the creation of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust (1973). Today is the only worldwide network of industrial heritage specialists.

One of the pillars of its activities is the organization every three years (sometimes every two) of a plenary conference in various countries of the world, and professional scientific meetings and forums in which a network of contacts interpersonal and institutional. As of 2006, 13 congresses have already been held.

From a small group of pioneer nations, the concept, study and promotion of industrial archeology and its heritage has been disseminated thanks to the contributions of universities, associations, culture, museums and businesses. The Committee is an intellectual force of specialists convinced of the need to include in the field of heritage culture the fields of technical history, social and architectural history of industry. It is also an effective communication tool, and a network currently hosting 60 nations and 500 members.

Because of its highly representative value, the Committee is, since the late 1980s, a World Heritage site of the International Council for the Preservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) of Unesco for the selection monuments, sites and landscapes of industry and industrialization and to include them in the list of Heritage. The headquarters of the Spanish section of Ticcih is located in the Asturian city of Gijón. It holds a congress of experts every four years in different Spanish cities.
