The Mission is one of the sectors that make up the city of Cabimas, in the state of Zulia, in Venezuela. Belongs to the Ambrosio parish.

Historic context

The Mission is the oldest sector of Cabimas, where the city was founded, but for a long time it was a town apart from La Rosa and Punta Icotea. In this site the Mission of San Antonio de Punta de Piedra was founded in 1758 by capuchin monks. In 1774 it was visited by the bishop Mariano Martí. During the war of independence the Mission was closed by orders of the patriotic army (given the support of the clergy to the Crown) and abandoned, its ruins fell, the name was left and its remains were found in 1990 by the archaeological society of Cabimas that found a key, tiles on the roof, indigenous burials among other artifacts. Location

The mission is between the Rosario Distributor to the North (it can be considered that it extends to the Mene River and the Santa Rita Municipality), the Sara Reyes sector to the South (Highway F), the Maracaibo Lake to the West and the Intercomunal Av (sector Los Olivos (Cabimas)) to the east. Between the Intercommunal Avenue, the Andrés Bello Avenue and the F, the Mission has the shape of a triangle. Residential area

In the Mission there is the Mission Stadium, where the procession of San Benito de Palermo arrives, the judicial detention of Cabimas. The homes of the Mission are all of the twentieth century, leaving nothing of its architectural heritage. In the Mission, remains of the old Mission and an indigenous cemetery have been found.
