Sjoeksjin was a famous figure in the Russian film world; He was both actor, scenario writer and director. For his scenario "Look What a Guy" (1964), Sjoeksjin received the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Literary work

However, Sjoeksjin is most famous for his more than one hundred stories about general-human, existential problems, in which the social aspect is in the background. At the heart of his stories are the farmer and rural man who draws into the city (and who experiences urban civilization as something alienating). Man is looking for his freedom, not political freedom, but the freedom to be himself, to let himself go in a dream world of fairy tales and poetry. His main characters are almost always single, looking for the happiness they do not find, lonely and melancholic. Vodka is an indispensable accessory in its stories: it relieves the pain. The biggest obstacle on the way to happiness is the woman in the role of wife. Furthermore, Sjoeksjin often thinks about the meaning of life and about God.

Sjoeksjin writes in a living language with much dialogue and many pieces in colored Russian people language.

A small selection of his stories appeared in the Netherlands in the series Russian Miniatures, together with work by, among others, Joeri Kazakov. In 2009, his work appeared in the collection of Modern Russian Stories.
