Aretas I is the first known king of the Nabataeans. His name appears on the oldest Nabataean inscription dating back to 168 BC. AD and found at Halutza.

It is also mentioned in the Bible (2 Books of the Maccabees 5: 8). This passage tells that Jason, the high priest who established a Greek city in Jerusalem was taken prisoner by Aretas I after being forced to leave the city. Sourcemode the code
