Seven Sisters (Schools)

The Seven Sisters (Seven Sisters) are seven native private liberal arts colleges for women in the northeastern United States. They were founded all seven between 1837 and 1889. The seven sisters are sometimes regarded as the historical female counterparts of the Ivy League, eight prestigious universities in the same region.

The Seven Sisters played an important role in giving women early in the last century the opportunity to pursue a degree in free arts that was comparable to the study available to men. Also, these colleges offered women a greater opportunity to follow a career in university education. Colleges

Four of the Seven Sisters are in Massachusetts, two in New York, and one in Pennsylvania. Both Radcliffe and Vassar are no longer exclusively for women.
