Suzan Daniel

Suzan Daniel (Brussels, 1918 - Uccle, November 15, 2007) was a lesbian activist who was at the heart of the first holebi groups in Belgium. Her real name was Suzanne De Pues. Her pseudonym brought them to French actress Danielle Darrieux, one of her idols.

Daniel came to the Brussels-based holebi environment in the 1930s, where she gradually became a leader figure. In 1953 she participated in a conference of the International Committee for Sexual Equality (ICSE) in Amsterdam. Overcome by the atmosphere, Daniel decided to set up a holebi group in analogy with the Dutch Culture and Recreation Center (COC) in Belgium, something that did not exist at the moment.

At the end of the same year, the Culture Center Belgium (CCB) was established. The name did not consciously refer to the holebi theme, so as not to choke society. However, the initiative was not long-lived. Partly this is explained by the fact that Daniel was the only woman in the board and had a different initiative than the men. Underrepresentation of women has been a major problem within the Belgian Hubbi movement. It is unique in international terms that the movement in Belgium had a woman as a pioneer, where there were almost always men in other countries.

Daniel disappeared after the break with the CCB from the spotlight, until 1996 a holebi archive was stamped out of the ground. The archive received the name Suzan Daniel, a tribute. Daniel was greatly honored and continued to work closely with the Fund until her death in November 2007. Externe link
