Magón (396 a.)

Magón was a Carthaginian soldier of the 4th century BC. C., commander of the Carthaginian fleet of Sicily under the command of Himilcón during the second Sicilian war against Dionisio I of Siracusa.

In the year 396 a. C., annihilated the Syracusan fleet commanded by Leptines of Syracuse in the naval battle of Catania. There is no further information about his role in the ensuing operations against the city of Syracuse; but, after the disastrous expedition and return of Himilcon to Africa, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Sicilian operations. It initiated a series of measures of conciliation with the Greek cities of the island, and concluded alliances with the Sicilian tribes. In the year 393 a. C., advanced towards Messina, but was attacked and defeated by Dionisio near Abaceno. The following year, after receiving reinforcements from Sardinia and Africa, he assembled an army of eighty thousand men with which he advanced through the heart of Sicily to the Dittaino River. There he met Dionisio, who had secured the alliance of Agiris, tyrant of Agira, thus cutting the supply route to the Punic. In this way, Magon was forced to sign a peace treaty by which he abandoned his Sicilian allies in the hands of Dionysius, and after this, Magon returned to Carthage, where he was promoted shortly thereafter. In the year 383 a. C., Dionisio began a new war and Magón disembarked to Sicily with a great army. After several skirmishes, both fought in an uncertain pitched battle where the Punic were defeated and Magon himself was killed ..
