The Poetry Circus

The Poetry Circus is a literary production house in Utrecht. The Poetry Circus annually produces ten to twenty productions on the intersection of poetry and other art disciplines. In addition, the Poetry Circus organizes the Dutch Championship Poetry Slam annually.

Origin

The Poetry Circus was founded in Utrecht in 1996 by Ingmar Heytze and Vrouwkje Tuinman, because in those years there were few podiums where beginner poets could submit to the public. In the first years the emphasis was on multidisciplinary stage nights with young, unknown poets. Later there were more famous poets, literary dinners, a monthly poetry slam and the Dutch Championship Poetry Slam. From a volunteer organization, the Poetry Circus developed into a semi-professional organization, with business director Michael Stoker. As of January 1, 2013, the Poetry Circus merged with the SLAU and some other literary organizations in Utrecht to The Literature House. Productions

In addition to the aforementioned activities, the Poetry Circus organized the 2008 festival Pessoa in the Netherlands, around the important Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. In 2009 an online public archive will be launched with sound recordings of talks by a large number of Dutch poets from the 21st century. Also see Externe link
