12 Council of Toledo

Council of Bishops of the Visigoth Kingdom celebrated in Toledo. It was celebrated in the church of the Holy Apostles between January 9 and January 25, 681. There were thirty-eight bishops, four abbots and fifteen Palatine officials.

The council freed the population from the Wamba oath and recognized Ervigio as King of the Visigoths, declaring anathema to anyone who opposed him.

The metropolitan bishop of Toledo was granted the right to consecrate those bishops who were appointed by the king, although they belonged to any other province, which gave rise to the primacy of the Toledo seat within the Hispanic Church. p>

The council treated the penance to which authorities were subjected and who, later, refused to take the habits. In fact, this resource had been used for the deposition of Wamba when he was unconscious.

The council took various measures, at the request of the king without opposition from the bishops (who confirmed them), against the Jews, decreed against them a total of twenty-eight laws. It was ordered that in all the churches read the dispositions and the records of abjuration of the Jews and their incorporation to the catholicism would be conserved. In Toledo the public reading of the laws in the Church of Santa Maria was proceeded the 27 of January of 681. The persecution was limited, except isolated cases, to the confiscation of goods.

In the council the king also requested that the Reces- vince Code, which contained contradictions and laws contrary to justice, be revised. The revision was made and came into force on October 21, 681. The Law abolished laws punishing those who caused serious damage to their slaves. Some new laws were included, and many others were modified. In general, the punishments to which the nobles were subjected and their privileges were greatly reduced.

The council dealt with various religious themes, including, in addition to the aforementioned penance, death, excommunication, the number of bishoprics, the election of bishops (recognizing in fact that many of them were appointed by the king , although legally it did not correspond such appointment), the sacrifice of the mass and some disciplinary points. The bishoprics created by Wamba were also abolished. The date of the annual provincial synods was set for November 1 of each year, as it had been done, even though the norm in force since the IV Council fixed its celebration in May, and it was reaffirmed that at least one should be celebrated at year in each province. Some priests of Galicia were punished for the treatment of slaves and pagan practices were condemned.
