Barbara Strozzi

The Gambiste by Bernardo Strozzi. Presumably this is a portrait of Barbara Strozzi. Between 1635 and 1639, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden, Germany.

Barbara Strozzi (Venice, August 6, 1619 - Padua November 11, 1677) was an Italian composer and singer. She was the natural daughter of Giulio Strozzi and Isabelle Garzone, a maid in his household. Giulio Strozzi, a fellow of the influential Strozzi family, intended her for a musical career. She received, among other things, Francesco Cavalli's lesson and published 8 collections of songs - which are 125 vocal pieces - and this is more than a famous composer. All this without the help of the church or a patron. With Giovanni Paolo Vidman (also Widmann), a colleague of her father with whom she was living, she received at least three of her four children. By will, she was arrested by Giulio Strozzi. Work Literature
