Flora and fauna protection area Maderas del Carmen

The Maderas del Carmen Flora and Fauna Protection Area is a biosphere reserve in the north of the Mexican state of Coahuila.

Maderas del Carmen surrounds the Sierra del Carmen, a segment of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range. The reserve includes both the scrubland of the arid Chihuahua desert and the jungle islands of the sky and high elevation enclaves in the oak and pine forests of the Sierra Madre Oriental.

The reserve is home to 400 species of birds and 70 species of mammals, including the black bear, the wild boar and the puma. Efforts are being made to reintroduce the desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) in the region, which has not been seen since the 1940s.

A Flora and Fauna Protection Area was established in 1994. In 2001, the Mexican company Cemex announced that it would buy private land in the area for conservation. The region was designated a biosphere reserve in 2006.
