Great Than

Portrait of Mor Than. The party of Attila Hungarian post stamp designed by Mór Than, 1848

Mór Than (Óbecse / Bečej, 1828 - 1899) was a Hungarian painter. He was educated in Italy and Vienna given his faculties and style similar to those of famous painters of his native land. He worked in a realistic pre-impressionist style. His subjects were mostly historical events and portraits, as well as fantastic or mythological themes. His frescoes decorate prominent public buildings in Budapest.

Mór Than also designed the first Hungarian stamp in 1848. The drawing is shown on the left. Anyway, the stamp stopped printing from 1849, when Hungary lost its independence and became a province of the Austrian Empire.
