Jehuda Cresques

Jehuda Cresques (1350? -1427?), also known by Jafuda Cresques and Jaume Riba, was a Mallorcan cartographer of Jewish origin and was probably the man who coordinated the maritime discoveries of the Portuguese naval school of Sagres, in the beginning of the 15th century.

Son of another notable cartographer, Cresques Abraham, born in Mallorca, Corona de Aragón. Together with his father, he was probably the author of the famous Catalan Atlas of 1375. Born in a Jewish family, he converted to Christianity after the persecutions in Mallorca (simultaneous throughout the Crown of Aragon) of 1391, adopting then the name of Jaume Riba (Jacobus Ribus, in Latin). As such, he was appointed Portuguese coordinator of the cartography of the naval school of Sagres in the 1420s, with the registration of a "Mestre Jacome de Malhorca" with that position. Most experts believe it is the same person.
