Rotgipfler

The rotgipfler is a grape variety used to make aromatic white wines. It is found mostly in the Gumpoldskirchen district, Thermenregion, Austria. It is often mixed with the zierfandler (also known as spätrot) to make the spätrot-rotgipfler wine. It is increasing its use to make quality wines. The wines of this variety are powerful, with a high alcohol content and suitable for storage in bodegas. In 1999 there were 188.42 ha of rotgipfler in Austria.

The rotgipfler was so named because of the reddish color of the leaf petiole. The first mention of the rotgipfler was in 1837 in Steiermark by Johann Burger. It is a cross between the traminer and the roter veltliner.
