Sunna (obispo arriano)

For the Islamic concept of sunnah, see Sunnah.

Sunna (fl 580 - 600) was an Arian bishop of Merida in the province of Badajoz (Spain) of Gothic origin.

After King Recaredo's conversion to Catholicism in 587, Sunna and the noble Goths Segga and Vagrila (probably counts) planned to assassinate the local Catholic bishop, Masona, and the doge of Lusitania Claudio and raise the whole province, probably proclaiming king to Segga. We do not know the development of the conspiracy, but it seems that some noble Goths who had agreed to return to Catholicism, recovered their old faith, and that many Roman citizens (supposedly Catholics) joined them. After the attempted assassination of Masona, one of the conspirators, failed, the future Witerico king (probably count by then) revealed the details of the plot. Claudio easily stifled the attempt. Segga's hands were cut off (punishment that seems to have been reserved for the usurpers), his property was confiscated and he was banished to Galicia. Vagrila took refuge in an emeritense church, and the king ordered to confiscate his properties and deliver them to said church, but Bishop Masona forgave him and returned them to him.

Sunna received the offer to receive another bishopric if she converted to Catholicism (the Arian bishopric of Mérida had to be suppressed and the Catholic was already covered, in any case the bishopric offered would not be metropolitan); Sunna refused and was banished, marching to Mauritania where he propagated Arianism until his violent death, whose date is unknown (it is assumed that around 600).
