Tuscarora

Original territory of the Tuscarora.

The Tuscarora are an indigenous tribe of North America member of the Iroquois Confederation, whose name comes from ska-ru-ran, which means "hemp collectors". They originally lived near present-day Raleigh (North Carolina), although most now live on the Tuscarora reservation in New York, near Niagara Falls, and some others in the original territory and in Ontario.

Formerly they were a powerful tribe, but after the confrontations with the colonists of 1711 they were very decimated, and they were forced to request vassalage to the Iroquois Confederation, being admitted as one of its members.

They were 5,600 in 1708, but in 1970 there were 600 in Ontario and 700 in New York and North Carolina. According to Asher there were 1000, of which 333 spoke the language. According to the US census UU of 2000 there were 3,705 tuscarora in its territory. List of famous tuscarora
