Atilio Fortunato

Atilio Fortunato (Atilius Fortunatus) (IV century), Roman writer author of a treatise on prosody and metrics of Horace, although little is known about him and the book has not been well preserved. He wrote before the fifth century because he mentions Casiodoro in a funny dedication to a young man of senatorial rank.

The manual opens with a discussion on the fundamental ideas of metrics and the main rules of Latin prosody, and ends with a detailed analysis of Horacio's metric. The main authorities used are Cesio Baso and the Latin adaptation by Juba the grammarian of Heliodoro's Τέχνη. Fortunato was a common name in the African provinces, so it is likely that the author was a citizen of Juba, Terenciano Mauro and Mario Victorino. Bibliography
