The Central Algonquin languages are generally seen as a subgroup of the Algonic languages as a member of the Algerian languages.
The language family is more an area group, or the language family does not necessarily have many related words. Central Algonyms are spoken in the following states of the United States: North Dakota, Oklahoma, Kansas, Minnesota, northern Michigan, northern New York, Vermont, Maine, Iowa and a small part of Illinois (northernmost point from the west). This language family is also spoken in the southern part of Canada. Especially in the province of Ontario. Only the most Eastern Central Algonian languages (especially in Maine) differ greatly with the rest of the language family. The Potawatomi and the Ojibwe are often seen as the general central algal. These two languages are therefore very similar.
