Pernicious access is a parasitic erythrocytopathy with visceral, renal and neurological manifestations. It is due to the active and rapid multiplication of Plasmodium falciparum (parasites that cause malaria in humans) in the visceral capillary red blood cells producing tissue anoxia by hemolytic anemia and, possibly, disseminated intravascular coagulation.
