Robert Hepburn

Robert Hepburn (Bearford (Haddingtonshire), 1690 or 1691 - Edinburgh (?), 1712) was a Scottish writer and lawyer.

Because many of him were expected, he was sent to Holland to study civil law. He returned in 1711 to conduct his profession as a lawyer in Scotland. After his return, he started the magazine The Tatler, by Donals MacStaff of the North, following Richard Steeles The Tatler. Hepburn, however, missed Steele's genius and his work was found to be satirical and personal, leaving only thirty numbers of his magazine published. In 1712 he was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in Edinburgh, but he died the same year. Three works, released after Hepburn's death, testify to his knowledge and literary qualities.
