The Severians (or Severus) were a Slavic tribe.

Initially settled in the plains and forests of the Eastern European plains, some remained in present-day Ukraine while another part settled - during the great Avares incursion in 558 - to the south downstream course of the Danube (Dobruja and Loudogorie). This settlement in the southern plain of the Danube was made with the authorization of the Byzantine Empire; in return, the Severians were to defend the southern banks of the Danube Delta and the eastern Balkan passes.

In 679/680 they became part of the Slavic tribes who allied themselves with the Bulgarians of Asparukh against the Byzantine Empire. Some of the Severan princes and boyars held high positions in the first Bulgarian state: one of the best known is Semir, who was a jovan under Boris I of Bulgaria.
