The Gambois were supporters of the Gamboa Guipuzcoan lineage. During the Middle Ages the oñacinos were confronted in the so-called wars of bands, in which events took place such as the Mondragón fire in 1448. They had as allies the Agramonteses and the kingdom of Navarre.

The head of the Gamboíno lineage seems to have been Sancho Vélez de Guevara, grandson of Sancho García de Salcedo, Lord of Ayala, around 1150. From Sancho Vélez de Guevara, his brothers and sons, the descendants of the surname Gamboa come from the Iberian penisula and in the countries of Latin America. Bibliography
